During the Citizenship Festival, teachers, young people, parents, policymakers, and social organizations come together to share knowledge, find inspiration, and work collectively toward inclusive education. The festival is not an endpoint but the beginning of a movement where connection and cooperation are central. This way, a sustainable network around citizenship is created, firmly rooted in the Bonairian community.
“Our island is a precious treasure for current and future (young) generations. They deserve a promising future and the confidence that they can meaningfully influence it.”
– Nilva Wout, Executive Director SBMO, driving force on behalf of education.
The Six Pillars of Citizenship on Bonaire
Citizenship on Bonaire is approached through six content pillars that guide education on the island and shape how children and young people grow into engaged citizens.
Language plays a central role as a means of expression, connection, and identity formation. Religion and identity provide a foundation for meaning and self-awareness, essential for understanding yourself and others. Bonaire’s history is regarded as a valuable source of insight and recognition, contributing to collective awareness. Nature is seen not only as our living environment, but as a shared responsibility in the face of climate change and ecological awareness. Democracy serves as a training ground for participation, dialogue, and shared decision-making, where young people learn how to make their voices heard. Finally, art and culture offer space for creativity and strengthen the sense of community and connection.
The Citizenship Festival Program
Bonaire has a rich cultural, historical, and multilingual context, but it also faces major challenges in education, youth participation, and social cohesion. The festival was born from local questions and needs: how can we make education more inclusive, relevant, and connected to society? During the event, schools, organizations, and residents come together to learn, share, and build a future where young people feel seen, heard, and involved.
The Citizenship Festival is for everyone who wants to contribute to strong and future-focused education on Bonaire. Whether you teach, guide young people, or are involved from policy, community work, or cultural and social organizations, during the festival you will meet others who believe that collaboration and connection are the foundation for good education.
The festival offers a varied program at different locations across the island, including workshops, dialogue sessions, and inspiring practical examples. The six content pillars – language, religion & identity, history, nature, democracy, and art & culture – form the common thread throughout the program.
